Full Tilt 2 - 1979 Hinterhoeller Niagara 26
The Niagara 26 combines many traits that makes it an excellent starter yacht or a PHRF or club racer. At 26 feet 8 inches LOA and 8 feet 4 inches beam it is at that size where boats begin to have a usable cabin and standing headroom for those under 6 feet tall. While just large enough for two decent cabins and an enclosed head area it is still small enough to be affordable when compared against 30 foot and larger boats. The initial cost is much less and all gear, sails, and other equipment is achievable to a new yachter. Despite this the boat is large enough for two people to cruise on for a week or even for a family with young children to use as a cruising boat for weekends or even longer.
In terms of sailing performance the boat begins to excel. Its sailing characterstics are more similar to race oriented boats such as Kirby 25 or J24 than they are to a larger cruising boat. The rig is exceptionally well balanced with a tiller so light that it can be steered with two fingers if desired (although I see no reason why you would). The Kirby 25 which is marginally faster can in no way be called a cruising boat and only a diehard sailor would ever consider staying aboard for more than a night or perhaps two. A J24 is again similar. Other cruising boats in the 25-27 foot range have good cabin but feel heavy on the helm. This is the best feature of the Niagara it combines the sailing performance and feel of a race oriented boat with the comfort and roominess of a cruise oriented boat.
If you want performance but need a comfortable cabin then you must go for a sail on a Niagara! If you only want comfort or only performance then there are other boats for you. This boat is a cruiser that has the feel of a dingy!
